Ferdinand Waititu secures Sh53 million bank guarantee, eyes possible release from Kamiti
The guarantee, once deposited, would pave the way for Ferdinand Waititu's freedom, however, the bond terms issued earlier in the hate-speech case still stand.
Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Ndung'u Waititu has secured a bank guarantor in his corruption case, the Nairobi Magistrates' Court heard on Tuesday, raising the possibility of his release from Kamiti Maximum Prison.
Waititu, who is currently serving a 12-year sentence following his conviction in the graft matter, was produced before Trial Magistrate Rose Ndombi for the mention of a separate hate-speech case.

His lawyer informed the court that the former county chief had managed to obtain a bank guarantee worth Sh53 million, which is one of the conditions set for his release.
Magistrate Ndombi confirmed that the guarantee, once deposited, would pave the way for Waititu's freedom, noting that the bond terms issued earlier in the hate-speech case still stand. The ex-governor has remained in custody since February.
The hate-speech proceedings stem from allegations that Waititu uttered incendiary comments during a political gathering at Ruiru Stadium on September 29, 2024.
Prosecutors claim the remarks targeted several groups - among them hustlers, small-scale traders, boda boda riders, clergy, and teachers - and were crafted to incite tension and suggest potential violence against political leaders.
The court fixed the full hearing of the hate-speech case for January 15, 2026, even as Waititu awaits processing of the multi-million shilling guarantee that could see him leave prison ahead of the trial.
